In our household, we are dedicated LeapFrog fans. Teagan has the Learn & Groove Counting Maracas, Learn & Groove Musical Table, and Learn & Groove Alphabet Drum. She’s had these toys since she was an infant. Leapfrog toys feature outstanding educational quality and I think that is the reason why Teagan returns to them time after time. There’s always something to learn and explore. These toys last forever, which is great for families that can hand down the toys.
Teagan loves to read and she’s very curious about high tech gadgets. She already knows how to control our computer’s mouse plus and she has the ability to find the cool kid apps on our iPhones. So we were interested to see how she interacts with Leapfrog’s Tag Reading System. This system seems like a great tool and toy that gets kids excited about reading! We were definitely excited when LeapFrog introduced the Tag’s younger counterpart Tag Junior! Tag Junior is perfect for toddlers and offers familiar character board books such as Elmo, Winnie The Pooh and Dora The Explorer.
Families need to have a computer to download the audio from the LeapFrog website into the Tag Junior book pal for each individual book. The book pal holds up to 5 book titles and downloading the audio is simple to do. The Tag Junior book pal is hand held and children can scan or stamp over the words and pictures. I appreciate the simple battery cover on the Book Pal. Most toys are like armored trucks when removing battery covers (I totally understand why) but this cover comes off quickly with a flathead screwdriver. But don’t worry, the cover is secure. You’ll also find the USB port in the battery compartment. Plug in, download, and you’re kids are ready to read!
How exactly does it work? I inspected the books and noticed tiny dots on the pages. I figured the process is similar to a barcode scanner. The Tag Junior book pal has a small, sophisticated infrared camera that “reads” words and pictures printed on special dot-patterned pages of the sturdy, child-friendly board books in the Tag Junior Collection. Teagan immediately figured out how to unlock the sounds and stories by stamping the pages with the book pal.
We received the purple Tag Junior book pal ($34.99). The book If I Were comes with the Reading System. If I Were explores animal sounds. We also received the book, Sesame Street: Monster Faces. This is a simple book that introduces emotions. Teagan loves that squeaky Elmo voice. This one seems to be a quicker “read” than the other books we have. It doesn’t have a story line. Elmo just introduces different emotions. Each board book invites toddlers to check out something different such as social skills, senses, and even Mandarin Chinese! The book’s content is easily memorized while your child listens and learns the sounds of the words. Teagan reads along as she listens to the books and she can do this independently or when she shares with us. Every new read means that Teagan found another activity or response that she didn’t previously discover. I especially like that one of the activities is to find an object hidden somewhere in the book. I definitely prefer packing a Tag Junior over her watching DVDs on a car ride. Or it’s nice to have other options for those really long trips.
I read that you can personalize Tag Junior book pal with your child’s name. I’ll have to check that feature out. You can also connect the Tag Junior Book Pal to the online LeapFrog Learning Path to see your child’s progress and get printable activities to expand the learning!
Teagan adores her Tag Junior. Tag Junior is a wonderful product for early readers. Books come to life and it’s a fun interactive introduction to reading. You can read the books on their own or with the book pal. We’ve already purchased two other books at Toys R Us. Ni Hao, Kai–Lan- Share and the classic Mr. Brown Can Moo! You can’t beat a Dr. Suess treat! Tag Junior books can be bought at LeapFrog. com or Toys R Us for $10.99. Not bad considering traditional books easily run for that price or more.
