Review & Giveaway: "Dear Dad" Book

“Dads are stone skimmers, mud wallowers, water wallopers, ceiling swoopers, shoulder gallopers, upsy-downsy, over-and-through, round-and-about whooshers. Dads are smugglers and secret sharers.” Quote by Helen Thomson in “Dear Dad”

With June 20th right around the corner, the day to celebrate these everyday super heroes is quickly approaching.

If you are seeking a gift for the book or photo-loving father in your life, check out “Dear Dad” a beautiful compilation of photographs and quotations that poetically convey the true meaning of fatherhood.

Each photo will have you focusing on the faces and emotions of the fathers and their children, or in some cases grandchildren. I found myself flipping through the book again and again. Even my preschooler liked hanging over my shoulder and giving me her play-by-play of the book. “That little boy is soooo happy that he gets to be with his daddy.”

Scrap all that time wasted having your family stand in place and smile at the camera. This book will inspire you to take a photo journalism approach to your picture taking so that you can further savor the fleeting moments, whether its a little girl watching in awe as her grandfather shaves or little hands holding tightly and protectively onto their dads’ hand.

Given the recent popularity of the documentary “Babies” — the movie following the progress of four infants in Nambia, Mongolia, Tokyo and San Francisco and highlighting the many similarities versus differences – it struck me in “Dear Dad” how similar the father/child relationship is no matter where in the world the photos were captured.

Although coffee table books are nice, I also especially appreciate this smaller 4-1/4 x 6 inch volume so that I could easily ship or store it on my bookshelves. The book can be purchased for $14.95  directly from the publishers by going here.

To help celebrate Father’s Day, Chronicle Books is giving away a copy of Dear Dad and a great how-to book called Handy Dad to a That’s It Mommy reader!

That’s IT Mommy Friend, Jill

When I was young I loved to do everything with my dad. I didn’t know at the time that I was doing work, I thought we were just having fun together.

My greatest memory with my dad is when I was young we would go to the store and buy a hot link then drive to the flea market in his convertible. He passed away when I was 12 and I miss him everyday.
