My husband I remember the days when skateboarding, scooters and bike riding weren’t so “extreme”. I was never into bike riding as a sport but my husband raced BMX bikes and rode a Gator Hypno deck all over the state of Massachusetts in the 80’s. It amazes me how these types of sports have evolved. It used to be just about getting from one place to another and maybe few tricks. Now it’s all about ripping, shredding and getting agro or tech! The X Games even have winter and summer competitions.
We always see the kids riding Razor scooters and skateboards in our neighborhood. And lately we have started to see the Wave Street Surfing boards. Building on the success of the Wave caster board, the Whiplash Wave Scooter enters the picture blending surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding techniques. The Whiplash Wave Scooter is part caster board, part scooter and looks really cool! You can ride it like a scooter by carving and drifting like the Wave, creating enough momentum to self-propel yourself so that your feet never touch the ground!
That’s IT Mommy was given the chance to try out the Whiplash Wave Scooter. The only problem was finding a suitable rider! The manufacturers suggested age range is 5 Years and up. So my husband took it for a ride and figured out how to maneuver the scooter within minutes. But his 6’ 3” frame was way too big for a comfortable ride. And Teagan is almost three. What to do? Luckily a few of the neighborhood kids saw my hubby carving it up and generated some curiosity and requests for a chance to ride.
The age range of participants was 6-14 years old. Up first was Carlos, a 14 year old avid skater who was a little reserved testing out the Whiplash. He commented that he’s tried the Wave and compared to the Whiplash he found it hard to learn to control. After a few attempts to get it going he gave up and thanked us for the opportunity. I began to get worried that if an experienced skater could not find success after a few tries than what would happen with the younger kids?
The younger girls used the whiplash as a “scooter” and stood with two feet on the front deck toes pointing forward instead of side ways like a skateboard or snowboard. The 6- year-old was fearless as she rode up and down the driveway. One of the other girls (8 yo) was “scared” until she was able to figure out how to ride it. She rode it more like a scooter as well.
With only one more kid to try it out, I thought this test was going to be a bust. That was until 9-year-old Miguel stepped on the Whiplash. Miguel has ridden the Wave and rides his Razor scooter daily. It took him a moment to get used to putting feet sideways. After a few initial attempts and a little coaching from my husband on how to propel yourself Miguel was carving up the drive way! He thought the Whiplash was easier to control and ride than the Wave. The T-bar provided him with some security and familiarity. It was cool seeing him take corners and race around the complex. He was even attempting some tricks. Our trial was a success!
It seem like the smaller sized kids had the most success riding the Whiplash. As I stated, my husband being 6’3” was much too tall. Carlos was only 5’ and weighed 100 lbs but I think his trial not working out had more to do with his attitude and not having instant success. But Miguel and the girls are well under 5’ and less than 75 lbs and were willing to keep trying. They were successful much faster. Maybe it has to more with them riding scooters more than skateboards? None of them surf or snowboard. Although too young, we helped Teagan stand and balance on the Whiplash and pushed her around a bit. I know she’ll be whipping around the neighborhood once she gets older.
A few product notes: The Whiplash Wave Scooter was easy to assemble right out of box and only requires the Allen wrench and bolts that were supplied. The Platform is made of virtually indestructible ABS plastic. And a spring-oriented torsion bar controls front and rear panels. The rear caster wheel features ABEC 7 bearings. An extra long T-bar handle folds up for easy travel and storage. Suggested retail price is $79.99.
That’s IT mommy thinks the Whiplash Wave Scooter is a really cool new way to ride around. We love how its kid powered and relies on self-propulsion. It’s definitely for boys or girls and can be used at different age levels 5+.

The WaveLX would definitely be my next favorite street surfing product.
It’s advertised “built for speed” got my attention. I know I’m a big too old and big to use the whiplash but if I won , I would be happy to give it to my soon to be 10 year old nephew. He’s an avid skater and BMX rider , so I’ve heard.
