Art Review & Giveaway: Clementine Art

I love art! I’m a graphic designer, studied photography and took tons of art classes. Therefore, it’s only natural that many of my projects with my daughter are art based. I’ve introduced many types of mediums to her and lately I’ve been looking for products that are natural and non-toxic. I came across Clementine Art. Based in Boulder, CO Clementine Art is a company that offers art products that are “Natural, Fresh and Real”!

We received their natural paint set to review. The set consists of six jars of tempera paint, which retails for $13.99. They are colored with Mayan mineral earth pigments and the colors definitely have pleasing, deep earth tones.

For our art project, we started off with a self-portrait. Teagan can be a serious painter with her apron and easel. Teagan sampled all the rich colors and seemed to favor the blue and purple colors. Teagan’s brush strokes were smooth and the paint was never clumpy.

We did a couple of other projects. Teagan painted a cardboard box and reused toiler paper rolls. The box would be great to store knickknacks or to pack a gift in. We also used toiler paper rolls to create homemade binoculars. We painted the tubes and paper clipped the ends together. Viola! Quick and simple!

Tempera dries quickly and I noticed that Clementine paint dried into bright almost fluorescent shades of pink and yellow on the cardboard pieces. A small drop of paint goes a long way. We’ve done numerous projects since we received the set and we still have a good amount of paint to go through. Clementine paint is easy to clean with soap and water. Parents can feel good about using these products that are free from chemicals and dyes.

I’m a firm believer in enriching our children’s lives through all the Fine Arts. It’s unfortunate that so many art and music programs have been cut from school curriculum. Art is a necessity to balance their learning process. Kids can be kids when creating. No pressure to conform or stress about homework. Art is simple and is therapeutic. Fortunately we have companies like Clementine Art for nourishing a child’s creative side and helping parents feel comfortable about safe products they use.

Clementine Art products are great for kids 3+.

Mexican flower. Our favorite because it is so easy and no mess.
Take three 9 inch squares of tissue paper. Fold as a fan (back and forth) or just scrunch it from the middle to make a “bow”
Fold a pipe cleaner in half and place in the middle of gathered tissue paper. Twist and that would be the stem. Open up sides of tissue and separate layers to form a flower.

I LOVE the natural crayons and have been an admirer of Clementine products from way back. I’m also fan on FB and follow on Twitter (twitter handle is @feterie).

A fun project I did with my son was create these printables to help him practice his handwriting skills and etiquette at the same time. Here is the link to the post about it: http://www.feterie.com/blog/2009/09/17/freebies-goodies-its-all-for-you/

Thanks!

We like to take a piece of paper and tape it within an aluminum square cake pan. We then put some drops of paint on the paper and put about 5 or so marbles inside. Then roll the marbles–the kids love it and make really neat designs. Each one is unique!

For a fun art project for the tiny-set among us: as the leaves start tumbling down in Fall, gather a bunch of differently-shaped leaves, lay on a flat surface, place paper on top and using the flat side of a crayon gently color over the leaves in large swathes. Use one color for each leaf or run each color from top to bottom of paper and create a new line of color going down next to it for a rainbow effect with different leaves showing their veins and shapes!

My son made a really cute stained glass-style heart for Valentine’s Day. He put small pieces of red, pink, and white tissue paper between pieces of Contac paper, cut it into a heart shape, and then added a thread for hanging.

On a recent rainy day I improvised the following craft with my 2.5 year-old – take an empty toilet paper tube, poke 6 holes in it (3 on each side) and insert 3 pipe-cleaners through the holes to give your bug legs.

Take one more long pipe cleaner, fold it in half and insert it in the tube, looping it around the top “leg” pipe cleaner. Two ends should stick out the top of the tube, so twist or curl these into antennae, then let you’re kid decorate their bug! #1
