Wii Game Review & Giveaway: Epic Mickey

Disney Epic Mickey is an action-adventure platforming game for the Wii console that sends Mickey Mouse on an epic journey of creativity and discovery. As Mickey, the player is propelled into Wasteland, an alternate world made up of Disney’s forgotten creative efforts, and is given the power to wield paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world while determining Mickey’s path to becoming an epic hero.

Through the use of this unique paint and paint thinner, the key components of animation and Mickey’s tools for impacting his world, players will have the ability to shape how the story unfolds as they discover the concept of “Playstyle Matters” – an innovative style of gameplay created by Disney Interactive Studios’ Junction Point, led by industry luminary Warren Spector, where players creatively tackle different challenges in the world to explore all the possibilities and storylines – but with consequences for their chosen actions.

Ok, I admit that I’m a sucker for Mickey Mouse and anything that has to do with Disney. I was eager to test out Epic Mickey after seeing a preview of the video game at a Disney Interactive event I attended in November.

I received my review copy and popped it into our Wii system. The intro to Disney Epic Mickey was surprisingly dark and creepy although intriguing. Here we learn how our favorite (and curious) mouse ends up in Wasteland.

I’m totally addicted to Epic Mickey! The video looks amazing and I’m in awe of the artistic landscapes of Wasteland. Mickey’s paintbrush is powerful and has both thinning and painting options. Use the thinner to remove walls or fight enemies. The paint is useful to fill in walls and uncover pathways to help you get to your destination. I love the 2D vintage cartoon scenes when Mickey visits the projector portals. The different dimensions make the game unpredictable and chock full of creative fun. The music helps set a unique mood. I heard a radio news article highlighting the composer Jim Dooley and how he created and programmed the music score to follow the action you are creating during game-play. You get a different soundtrack for your different movement and emotion every time you play!

One big part of the Disney culture is pin collecting. Epic Mickey features collectible pins as part of the game-play. This adds another fun element to your gaming experience.

I’m having a hard time with Mickey’s avatar perspective because at times the view seemed to have a mind of it’s own. The correct angles can help you figure out where to go next. At times I felt lost. I’ve been working at it and I think I’ve figured out how to use the arrow buttons to control the views. There were also certain quests that left me a little confused but finally completing the challenges has been very satisfying. I just completed the Asian Boat Ride quest and loved unlocking and running across the Chinese Dragon.

This game is rated E and there is cartoon violence. I feel this video is appropriate for older children. Younger children might be scared by visions of Mickey in danger. Mickey gets sucked into Wasteland by a ghoul in the intro and he does “die” when you lose your turns. I like epic games and that my game-play decisions control the outcome. I really enjoy Epic Mickey and can’t wait to see what my outcome of the game is. Does Mickey make the right choices and fix the wrongs he made? Plus seeing old Disney characters such as Oswald the Lucky Bunny (he rules Wasteland) and Sorcerer Yen Sid (created Oswald) bring the very old and new Disney together for an exciting, curious and colorful gaming experience!

I don’t even play platform games (just like I don’t play RPGs but still got Kingdom Hearts), but all of the scenery and cartoon references really had me excited when I first saw this game in action. I’d play the game just for those reasons.

My mom made him a Mickey Safari outfit, complete with a safari hat with Mickey ears! It was a special day for him. He met Mickey and was in the Lion King show!

So we have had Mickey’s Clubhouse themed birthday parties more times than I care to admit. Seeing the kids’ faces light up each time they see/hear Mickey is an adventure in and of itself! We are huge Disney fans and can’t wait to visit the “cast” in person!!

My last Epic Disney Adventure was when my mother, brother and I took my boys (shortly after my divorce to their father) to Disney to experience the magic for the first time. On one trip this summer my seven year old sister lost a tooth while we were waiting for the fireworks (this was the second time she’s lost a tooth waiting for fireworks there actually!) The tooth got dropped and as we were all looking for the tooth we accidently spilled our entire container of popcorn. When the fireworks ended and the cast members came out to clean we had 2 sweepers down on the ground with us searching through the popcorn looking for that lost tooth. The tooth never was found so the tooth fairy got a note instead explaining that she’d have to ask Mickey mouse if she wanted the tooth!

One day while we were at Disneyland on Main Street Pluto came out and we were the first to spot him. My youngest siblings are twins and were about 3 years old at the time. They each grabbed a hand and skipped all the way across the street with Pluto. Everyone was watching and making comments on how cute. The twins are seven now and still remember the day they got to take Mickey’s dog for a walk!

I have met the greatest people at Disneyland. I was there last week and was talking to a family from Australia while we were in line for a ride in Fantasyland. The mom and teenage daughter were teasing the father that they were going to take him to Bibbity Bobbity Boutique for a princess make over as revenge for him forcing them to go in the scary horror maze at Universal Studios. I got to joke with them about all the possible styles they could try on dear old dad. I ran into them again later in the day and they were still laughing that they were making an appointment for his princess make over.

I am currently living six hours away from my children because I had difficulty finding a better job in the region I was living in. I have to wait six months before moving them to my new home. Winning this would be exciting for all of us.

I have also been following the development of this game for more than a year. I believe it is creatively revolutionary. If I received a signed copy it would be valued forever.
