Bubbles are the ultimate summer activity. Inexpensive, outdoor fun to be celebrated with all ages! But I was getting so frustrated with the lame bubble solutions and mini wands I buy at the drugstore – the bubbles were tiny, our cheeks grew sore with blowing and we spent half our time fishing lost
wands out of the bottom of the bubble bottles. So we sought to review the ultimate Big Bubble Wand (www.bigbubblewands.com).

According to the manufacturers anyone can make giant bubbles with Majic Bubble Wands! Soft and flexible, the Majic Bubble Wand allows even young children to make tons of bubbles with a simple wave of the hand! Just dip the wand in the bubble solution (easy to make recipe included), and wave it around to fill the air with bubbles!

The Bubble Wands come with a large flat bubble solution tray so no fishing is necessary. The set comes with four 18 inch wand sticks and four wand heads in the shape of a flower, fish, turtle and heart. And rather than send you pre-packaged solution, the Bubble Wand folks share their secret bubble solution which was quick and easy to make with three ingredients I typically keep stocked in my kitchen. The large bubble solutions trays use a lot more solution than our typical bubble outings so I like being able to make a gallon at a time. I know it sounds like a lot but whipping it together in an old milk jug and keeping under my kitchen sink is easy.

The Bubble Wand folks were right on! Three adults and three kids ages 2-4 had a blast running around the grass making big bubbles. My daughter experimented with a two wand method she called the butterfly. My husband did scientific comparisons of the different bubbles created by the different shaped wand heads. I can’t wait to get outside again with our bubble wands.

Bubble Wands are made out of a heavy duty soft plastic called polypropylene. Unlike most plastics, it is soft and flexible, and is made to bend without breaking. To make sure you are satisfied with Bubble Wands, they offer a full lifetime guarantee on every single wand they sell. If it breaks, they will replace it hassle free. Bubble Wands are manufacture red by a Canadian, family-owned company since 1984.

You can purchase either the Family Bubble Kit ($19.99) or Double Kit Spring Special ($39.99) – 2 sets of wands, 2 bubble trays plus 2 extra wands on www.bigbubblewands.com

I’m always looking for new products to try that might make my life easier or that my kids would enjoy. Since I’m returning to work soon, I’ve been eyeing various baby bottles to transition him to. Since I’ve been breastfeeding my son, it’s important for me to find a bottle he will take to easily! I was recently sent a 9-ounce Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottle to review. The bottle is designed to mimic the feel of the breast, thus making it ‘closer to nature’. I love that the company promotes breastfeeding and tried to design a bottle around this. It’s comfortable to hold and is easy to clean—I just disassemble all the parts and throw them in a dishwasher basket. Before the first use, I sterilized the bottle, bottle parts and nipples in boiling water then followed up in the dishwasher. The boiling water method caused cloudiness in the bottle and nipple, which I haven’t been able to get rid of, though.
The company also recommends care taken when cleaning the anti-colic nipple valve, as it’s manufactured using a thinner silicone than the nipple itself and care should be taken to ensure no damage is caused. It states to not use a bottle brush, as this may split or damage it.

Bottle Features:

Nipple mimics natural feel, flex and movement of breastfeeding

Allows for easy transition between breast and bottle

Wide neck nipple for ease of latching on

Anti-colic, Anti-gas, and advanced easi-vent™ nipple valve

BPA and Phthalate Free

Has graduations in mls and ounces

Hygiene cap seals the nipple for travel

Top rack dishwasher safe

Our experience: Brendan didn’t take to the bottle at the first attempt. I must admit, I think this was user-error as the milk was a bit on the cold side. I’m not used to giving him a bottle..what can I say! Upon warming it up a bit more, the second attempt was much more successful and he finished the bottle without incident. As you can see above, he was a happy camper!

Tommee Tippee is a UK-based company that has made it’s way across the pond. They are Britain’s #1 baby feeding brand. They offer feeding products through all stages of development. There products can be purchased at Babies R Us and Amazon for $10.99.

Art plays a big role in our everyday life In our house. We feel that learning to express your creativity is a very important part of development. Adeline has loved drawing and painting from a very early age so I try to have a art/craft time everyday. Sometimes I will just give her a rock and she will paint it while I make dinner. It keeps us both happy.

I love finding companies that encourage creativity in children. Alex Toys is one of these companies. “ALEX’s mission is to provide children with quality creative products that foster personal expression and build self-esteem. The best children’s activities provide lots of fun and they open a child’s mind to new skills, new ideas and new worlds.” Alex toys produces over 1000 different items in these categories:imaginative and dramatic play, fashion and jewelry, whimsical children’s furniture, Rub A Dub® and Tub Tunes® bath toys, ALEX Little Hands® preschool products and ALEX Jr.®, developmental, plush and bath toys for baby!

The Little Hands line are specifically designed for the physical, cognitive and practical needs of toddlers and preschoolers. Adeline received two products from the little hands craft line to review. One was the My Pretty Mosaic and the other is Zoom Zoom Mosaic. Both include different boards and 14,000 large stickers to create mosaics. The My Pretty Mosaic features pictures of a castle, ballerina and flowers. While the Zoom Zoom Mosaic has a rocket, firetruck, bulldozer and other things that zoom. Each picture is individually wrapped with the stickers for that mosaic. This was an added bonus because I was able to bring just one on the the airplane to entertain Adeline for our recent trip. I though for sure that Adeline would love the Pretty Mosaic seeing she loves all things princess related. I was wrong! She begged to open the Zoom Zoom pack first! Each packet contained a picture with different shapes and colors that indicate where the sticker of that shape and color should go. Adeline enjoyed putting the stickers on the matching spots but had a little bit of a hard time lining them exactly. It was a great craft for her and I to do together. I am sure the more she does it the easier it will get. Plus it is a great way for her to practice her hand eye coordination. Adeline has enjoyed making all of the mosaics and giving them to us as “gifts.” We love hanging them on the wall.

I am a big fan of Alex Toys and will definitely be purchasing more products from them in the future. Adeline has already asked for the bathtub crayons so she can decorate the walls in the tub while bathing. You can view all the products on Alex Toys website: www.alextoys.com

In my house, there are certain foods that are notorious for being thrown out because we can’t remember how long they’ve been in the refrigerator! Baby food, leftover Chinese food, even the occasional breast milk (sigh). All due to the simple fact that I can’t recall how long ago I put the food in the refrigerator. I think having a timer to help me keep on top of leftovers is a great idea! The folks at double u products sent us a package of their magnetic DaysAgo timers.

The DaysAgo timer tracks the days and hours so you don’t have to with a simple, one button operation. Just push it and the timer is on, push it again for off. To reset it, press and hold for 5 seconds. So simple. The company promotes it’s uses beyond food—to track contact lenses storage, aquarium cleaning, plant watering, furnace filter, oil changes, exercise…everything in your life that needs tracking. I like that suggestion—exercise. Now that I think of it, I wonder how many days it actually has been…

Product Features:

One button operation

Digital display up to 99

Available in Magnetic, Suction cup or with 2 different sized bands (i.e. to wrap around a coffee bag)

Kathleen Whitehurst, the CEO and founder of double u products, originally designed the DaysAgo to help busy moms keep the food in refrigerators safe for their families. Now the DaysAgo has become a lifestyle product for which consumers themselves are always finding new uses. The DaysAgo timer was a winner of a Good Housekeeping “Good Buy Award”. Recently, they have also received two prestigious awards from Creative Child Magazine—the 2010 “Top Choice of the Year” award the 2010 “Seal of Excellence”, both in the parenting aids category.

Another great use…DaysAgo offers a special Pink edition of the counter to help keep track of monthly self-breast exams. Kathleen is a 10-year breast cancer survivor and committed to supporting breast cancer awareness. The pink DaysAgo timer comes with a suction cup so women can put it on their vanity or bathroom mirrors. She has also partnered with the Breast Cancer Network of Strength as part of her effort to promote early detection and self-breast exams. Her company will be donating 10 percent of all sales from the Pink DaysAgo to provide emotional. That’s IT Mommy loves companies that give back.

The DaysAgo Timer 2-pack retails for $8.00 and can be purchased on their website.

Many of this weeks post are dedicated to creative art products. I come across tons of products online and naturally some stand out to me more than others. Unique ideas always catch my eye but I tend to gravitate towards products that simply make me smile.

Hello Hanna is a site that I instantly fell in love with. Two friends, Anne Schultz & Jina Choi, started this San Francisco based company. Their products are colorful and compact. Their designs are simple and perfect for kids. I envy people who have great ideas!

Hello Hanna offers Get-Set Placemats (great for keeping kids busy when your eating out!), Hello Books, Sweet Stands and Wishing Trees. We received the three Hello Books: Robot Mission, Princess Castle and Monkey Business to review. The Hello Books allow you to build your own stories on an accordion fold book. Each book includes 5 sheets of removable stickers, a sheet of inspirational ideas plus the folded book and an envelope. Teagan’s favorite was the Robot Mission. We had fun selecting and building the stickers characters and objects. There are balloon thought stickers that you can use. Teagan instructed me on what to write. Then we took turns narrating and acting out her story.

Each book retails for $10.95. These books would make a nice stocking stuffer (I’m already thinking ahead!) or could make a nice piece of art in your child’s room. Also, they could make a nice gift to the grandparents. Don’t forget that each card comes with it’s own envelope. The Hello Books let you have your own adventure by decorating, creating, designing and write your own story!

The sky’s the limit with Crafty Kids Playhouses! Crafty Kids Playhouses, previously known as Kids Craft Playhouses, are scaled down cardboard craft models of their larger counterparts! The Creation Cottage and Shuttle Imagination are perfect canvases for your kids to create masterpieces they can use to imagine a trip to the stars!

Teagan has been very interested in the moon and stars lately. We thought the Shuttle would be perfect for our little Astronomer. Upon delivery, Teagan was intrigued by what arrived at our door. What looked like a thin pizza boxed housed the Crafty Kids Shuttle Imagination! I followed the instructions and put together the shuttle for her. ALL instruction baffles me but I was able to put together the shuttle within 5 minutes. Each Craft Model comes with six washable, non-toxic, jumbo markers but don’t stop with just markers! Get out those crayons, paints, stickers and go to town! We used two types of paint to design our shuttle. We totally improvised. Teagan and I interpreted our imagination and…blast off!

The Shuttle Imagination Craft Model ($24.95) fits perfectly on your tabletop and would be great for a craft to share with friends, or a classroom project or even fun with mom! The shuttle measures 14.5”L x 21.5” W x 22” H and is lightweight. We’re limited in space so the smaller size works well for us. The cardboard is durable and the double doors lead into a spacious interior area for hours of imaginary play.

Dads designed Crafty Kids Playhouses. I love when parents take traditional ideas (playing with cardboard boxes) and take them to a higher level! These dads take away the worry so you can enjoy your craft time with your kids. Their products are eco-friendly and made in the USA. A percentage of all sales of Crafty Kids Playhouses have been devoted to a variety of worthy like-minded groups. Visit www.craftykidsusa to view or purchase their models. Also, check out the Crafty Kids Playhouses Facebook page for their latest information!

I love art! I’m a graphic designer, studied photography and took tons of art classes. Therefore, it’s only natural that many of my projects with my daughter are art based. I’ve introduced many types of mediums to her and lately I’ve been looking for products that are natural and non-toxic. I came across Clementine Art. Based in Boulder, CO Clementine Art is a company that offers art products that are “Natural, Fresh and Real”!

We received their natural paint set to review. The set consists of six jars of tempera paint, which retails for $13.99. They are colored with Mayan mineral earth pigments and the colors definitely have pleasing, deep earth tones.

For our art project, we started off with a self-portrait. Teagan can be a serious painter with her apron and easel. Teagan sampled all the rich colors and seemed to favor the blue and purple colors. Teagan’s brush strokes were smooth and the paint was never clumpy.

We did a couple of other projects. Teagan painted a cardboard box and reused toiler paper rolls. The box would be great to store knickknacks or to pack a gift in. We also used toiler paper rolls to create homemade binoculars. We painted the tubes and paper clipped the ends together. Viola! Quick and simple!

Tempera dries quickly and I noticed that Clementine paint dried into bright almost fluorescent shades of pink and yellow on the cardboard pieces. A small drop of paint goes a long way. We’ve done numerous projects since we received the set and we still have a good amount of paint to go through. Clementine paint is easy to clean with soap and water. Parents can feel good about using these products that are free from chemicals and dyes.

I’m a firm believer in enriching our children’s lives through all the Fine Arts. It’s unfortunate that so many art and music programs have been cut from school curriculum. Art is a necessity to balance their learning process. Kids can be kids when creating. No pressure to conform or stress about homework. Art is simple and is therapeutic. Fortunately we have companies like Clementine Art for nourishing a child’s creative side and helping parents feel comfortable about safe products they use.

Clementine Art products are great for kids 3+.

It is hard to believe that a new school year is almost upon us! This is Adeline’s first year in preschool and we have searched high and low for the best back to school products. One that we found and were lucky enough to review is a back pack made by a company called Whoops Bunny. Whoops Bunny comes from a story about what else…a bunny!

Once upon a time a little bunny had a “whoops.” The bunny was jumping across the fingers on a hand and whoops…almost slipped off. The bunny and the whoops were captured forever in this rhyme and with a hop, skip and a whoops, Whoops Bunny was born. “Like that bunny, anyone, at any age, anywhere in the world, can experience a whoops! It’s a part of what makes life…life.”
I love that story and it makes Whoops Bunny products even better! Another added bonus is that Whoops Bunny considers the earth and takes environmental “whoops” very seriously. Whoops Bunny are proud to be part of a group called 1% for the Planet. This means that they donate 1% of their sales (not their profits) to audited grass roots environmental concerns.

Whoops Bunny products range from backpacks, lunchboxes and pencil cases to paper products, dinner ware and even rain coat and boots plus bows for your hair. They are almost all embellished with the Whoops Bunny signature bunny character and the ones that do not have the bunny coordinate with bright colored stars or polka dots.

Whoops Bunny sent us a Whoops Bunny Kite Bunny Back Pack to review, which retails for $25.99 (an average price for a backpack). The backpack features a Whoops Bunny flying a kite with a broken string (whoops) decorated with butterflies and flowers. The pack is made of really nice material. Very soft and easy to wipe clean. The colors are very bright and fun. The Back Pack is 13″ x 10.6″ x 4.7″, lined in bright orange with a zippered pocket and a name label insert. It is a perfect size for an elementary aged child and the graphics are super original so they won’t blend in with all the other backpacks. Adeline is so excited to use her new back pack on her first day of school. She has set it aside and refuses to use it until then. She loves the bunny and the whoops with the broken kite string. I am impressed with the quality of the back pack. It seems like it will last a long time. I also like the whole story behind all of the Whoops Bunny products because we all have had our “whoops” moments but we persevere. It is a great message for our children. Whoops Bunny Products can be views on their site: www.whoopsbunny.com.

September marks a huge milestone in our house! Adeline is starting preschool. I am so excited and a little sad at the same time. It is all going by so fast. One thing I am very excited for is finding cool back to school clothes for Adeline to wear on this new adventure. Sandbox Threads offers the coolest shirts that I have found so far and they even sent us one to review…even cooler!

Sandbox Threads is a company that makes hip t-shirts for babies all the way up to adult sizes featuring retro toys, political figures, iconic pop culture figures plus quirky words and phrases. Did you love The Breakfast Club? Then you can get a t-shirt featuring Molly Ringwald. Is Breast cancer your cause? How about a “Save the Boobies-help fight breast cancer” onesie. There are so many to choose from I am positive that anyone can find a favorite t-shirt for their little one to rock. As Sandbox Threads puts it, “We have designs for the funny toddler, the punk rock toddler, and every groovy toddler in between.”

I have to say it was hard to decide on which t-shirt would be best for Adeline but we chose a t-shirt with the word “Preschool” written across the front. No, not Princeton! We are just starting out…The t-shirt is light pink and brown ringer tee with the word “Preschool” written across in Navy Blue. We received a 4t and it is true to size. The retail price is $18.00 which is very reasonable. I have seen boutiques carrying “cool” toddler t-shirts for $40.00+.

I will be shopping at Sandbox in the future for Adeline and maybe even for myself. You can check out all the t-shirts online: http://sandboxthreads.com/
